Airports
Close airports to Berkeley are the San Fransisco International Airport (SFO) and Oakland International Airport (OAK). For anyone from Europe travelling to the US I recommend not have a stop inside the US, as you'll have to clear immigration and customs at the first US airport you arrive at. Hence choose SFO/OAK as your first and final stop in the US.
Getting from SFO/OAK to Berkeley:
I recommend not renting a car as the bay area is very congested and parking can be a problem. BART (Bay Area Rapid Transit) has direct connections from SFO/OAK to downtown Berkeley. If your hotel is further away from downtown Berkeley BART station or any other stop, I would recommend Uber/Lyft.
Riding the shuttle to the lab
You must show your ID and visitor pass to get on the shuttle.
There are several shuttle stops around Berkeley that come every 10-15 minutes See Shuttle Route below. If you are going from downtown berkeley to the lab or vice versa, you want to the Blue Shuttle.
Please note: there is no shuttle on weekends or holidays (like Monday the 27th). If you are staying at the Lab Guest House you can take a Taxi or Uber/Lyft (cheaper) up the hill. Check-in at the gate and they should let you and the driver drive in.

Parking
If you intend to come with a car you need to check-in at the gate and ask for a one-day parking permit every day you enter.
