Description
Abstract:
DESI is a Stage IV ground-based dark energy experiment that will study baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO) and the growth of structure through redshift-space distortions (RSD) with a wide-area galaxy and quasar redshift survey.
DESI will be installed at prime focus on the 4-m Mayall telescope in Kitt Peak. A new optical corrector will feed a robotically-positioned, fiber-fed spectrograph capable of taking up to 5,000 simultaneous spectra. In this talk I will present an overview of the entire instrument with a focus on robotic fiber positioners and the suitability of these different technologies for use in DESI. I will show recent results which demonstrate the ability of an LBNL designed candidate to meet the instrument design requirements and how this performance compares to alternative designs.
