Description
Terrorists have redefined the security problem. The U.S. government needs to protect all ports of entry, including air, land and sea. They need to inspect people, vehicles, containers and rail cars for threats and contraband materials. Threats include radiological dispersal devices and special nuclear materials such as highly enriched uranium and weapons grade plutonium. Explosive threats include military, commercial and homemade, while contraband includes tobacco, firearms and drugs. The talk will define some of the different threat vectors for air, land and sea ports and focus on some of the different instruments that are deployed or being developed to detect these threats and contraband. The underlying technics and physics basis for these instruments will also be discussed.
