Description
The Presidential BRAIN Initiative was launched in April 2013 with the inspiration of developing better tools for neuroscience. Such tools, and their subsequent evolution, could have transformative impact on areas ranging from fundamental neuroscience through patient diagnosis, treatment and prostheses. One of the most immediate benefits of better tools might simply be a better understanding of just what are the fundamental questions we should be asking. Neurotechnology mixes physical, biological, and computational science and engineering to an extraordinary degree, making it one which Berkeley Lab is particularly well poised to contribute to. This talk will (attempt to) outline the instrumentation challenges of the BRAIN Initiative, and ways in which Berkeley Lab is responding, including research at the nano- and micro-scale, and an example “app”. In keeping with the interdisciplinary theme, this will be a “team presentation”.
